Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted on a 141 ha (340 ac) tract of land that is to be used as a spray irrigation wastewater treatment site for the City of Winder, Georgia. Eighteen sites and four isolated artifact occurrences were discovered. Very few of the prehistoric sites had diagnostic artifacts. It is probable that most or all of the lithic scatters date to the Archaic period. A 19th century water powered milling complex was found where two mill pond areas and associated races could be discerned (9Bw26 and 9Bw27). Both are recommended as potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The mill complex is partially in the project boundary, but will not be impacted by construction or related activities. Archeological testing and/or mitigation is recommended if future activities will impact the site. No standing structures are within the survey area.
