According to the terms of a contractual scope of work between Carolina Archaeological Services (CAS) and H. R. Chasman and Associates, Inc. (MRCA), CAS undertook a short program of archaeological and historical inventory and site assessment covering a proposed water treatment plant for the City of Thomson. The study area (Fig. 1), which is located adjacent to J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir (formerly Clarks Hill Lake) in McDuffie County, Georgia, encompasses 54 acres of proposed water treatment plant (WTP), a 1/4-acre pump station, and 6000 linear feet of raw water pipeline corridor. Archaeological and historical research and field evaluations followed Federal and State guidelines for compliance with Sec. 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act as amended (P.L. 89-665, P.L. 96-515; 36 CFR 800)*. The basic goal of these guidelines is the adequate documentation of the presence/absence and significance of historic properties which may be affected by Federally assisted construction of water facilities (National Environmental Policy Act, P.L. 91-190). Survey of property under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District was conducted under Federal permit (Permit No. SAS 88-001) (Archeological Resources Protection Act, P.L. 96-95). The remainder of the property surveyed is under private ownership.
