Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America ยท (ECA) has completed an. Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The subject site includes a proposed 100-foot by 100-foot telecommunications compound and an approximately 90- foot by 20-foot access as shown on Attachment 12b. Clearing and grading would be necessary for construction of the proposed telecommunications compound and the access. The facility would include a 195-foot monopole (199-feet with appurtenances) telecommunications structure and associated ground level support equipment. The facility is located off Elbert Road in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia.

This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the proposed site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. From our review of available cultural records and databases we identified two archaeological survey reports within a one-mile search radius. One was conducted for a proposed wastewater plant expansion during December of 1976 and the other was conducted for a proposed industrial park during February of 1977. No archaeological sites were identified within a 1/2-mile APE search radius of the proposed site. Five prehistoric archaeological sites were identified within the larger one-mile search radius. Two of these sites, 9Cp7 and 9Cp14, were recommended potentially eligible in February of 1977 while no recommendation for National Register eligibility was determined for the remaining three. During the course of the Phase I intensive field survey portion of this archaeological assessment no archaeological cultural resources were encountered.

We conclude that the proposed undertaking would have no effect on any historic or prehistoric archaeological cultural resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the proposed undertaking.
