Abstract

The intensive cultural resources survey of the Oglethorpe Power Corporations's (OPC) proposed 13.8 km Due West-Cobb Water transmission line located one archeological site, consisting of a number of Civil War earthworks. A single deep rifle pit and approximately 15 m of trench with associated parapet lie within the 23 m wide transmission line corridor. This site is recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) because of its integrity and association with other trench segments which are listed on the NRHP. This site was built and occupied in mid-June 1864. From the orientation of the trenches, this site includes both Federal and Confederate fortifications. It is recommended that the earthworks comprising 9Co258 that lie within the corridor be preserved in place by OPC. Thus, the earthworks should be hand-cleared, no poles should be placed in them, no vehicles should be driven over them, and they should not be touched by heavy equipment. If these recommendations are followed, there will be no impacts to the archeological site.
