Abstract

Site 9R0156 [9RO(DOT)9] was located on April 9, 2010 during an archaeological survey for Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) project CSSTP-0007-00(102), PI 0007102 in Rockdale County. This project proposes to add an exclusive northbound left turn lane from SR 20 onto CR 26/Bell Road by symmetrical widening. Site 9R0156 is a light density historic artifact scatter, recommended as unknown eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The portion of 9RO 156 within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the above project does not contribute to the overall eligibility of the site.

Site 9R0156 is located within the proposed project's APE in the northwest quadrant of the intersection of SR 20 and CR 26/Bell Road (Figure 1). The site is a low density historic artifact scatter dating to the late 19th- early 20th century and is located in a grassy area adjacent to the SR 20 right-of-way and a parcel of planted pine. The project area is composed of primarily residential and commercial yards with a mix of manicured lawns, paved parking lots/driveways, and open grassy areas within the APE. The area of the APE where 9RO 156 is located also contains above and below ground utilities. Surface visibility within the APE was zero.
