Abstract

Soapstone Ridge is a unique geological and topographic physical feature in DeKalb, Fulton and Clayton Counties that covers approximately 25 square miles. The DeKalb study area has outstanding climax vegetation, rare archeological sites, historically and architecturally significant structures, as well as the unique geological formations and rugged topography. This study by the DeKalb County Planning Department examines the natural and human inventories which make Soapstone Ridge a unique entity. Conclusions are drawn recognizing the development pressures on the Ridge but recommending strict enforcement of County environmental protection policies and standards. Recommendations include protection of the predominant Ridge topography and vegetation; establishing an open space network relying on passable streams and utility rights-of-way, and public/private provision of additional multi-purpose open space. Unique natural, archeological, historical and architectural properties should be acquired on a priority basis. Soapstone Ridge can accommodate additional development of all types as long as these uses account for environmental constraints and have appropriate site coverage and design performance. The long term question remains whether Soapstone Ridge can sustain its delicate ecology and at the same time accommodate human activity.
