Abstract

Since past research has been sporadic and undertaken with inexperienced personnel, many sections of the study area have not been adequately surveyed for cultural resources. Phase II will also involve making a preliminary surface reconnaissance of all areas that might be affected by primary or secondary impact unless the unrecorded sites in those areas can be identified and avoided in the pre-engineering stages of public works. Such a reconnaissance will also allow the planning for preservation or mitigation (if required in the future) of cultural resources now in private ownership. The entire research program will allow Clayton County and its various planning agencies to have precise and up-to-date information on the extent and relative importance of the county's cultural resource base.
