Abstract

From October 15 to 17, Chip Morgan, Staff Archaeologist, conducted an assessment of the significance and extent of archaeological resources on that portion of Colonel’s Island designated for development as discussed in the memo of 10/6/75. Both historic and prehistoric resources were observed in the area examined.

The area containing the historic resources is made up of at least four successive and distinct occupation levels, including a prehistoric one. Above the level of prehistoric occupation is a historic level of the early 1800s. This is overlain by the South Brunswick development which occurred in the late 1800s. Finally, a modern level of the 1900s overlies much of the aforementioned. Inland and southwest of this area about 800 feet is a prehistoric resource.
