Abstract

In January 2006, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) performed a phase ll archaeological site evaluation at 9CM266 in northern Camden County, Georgia, on behalf of Summer Beach Development Group. The goal of the Phase II site evaluation was to gather archaeological and historical information suitable for determining the site's National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility status. Phase I survey of the area identified a Middle Woodland Deptford period artifact scatter on a prominent bluff overlooking a navigable slough that feeds into the Little Satilla River. The archaeological site evaluation involved digging additional shovel tests at 15-meter intervals throughout the site and digging five formal excavation units to expose 8.25 square meters. Based on the results of the testing, the majority of the site was determined to contain limited deposits; however, one area of moderate to high concentration was encountered in the eastern portion of the site. Further testing in this area determined the relatively dense deposits to be extremely localized. As such, 9CM266 does not exhibit characteristics that would make it eligible for NRHP inclusion. No further archaeological investigation is recommended for this prehistoric site.
