Abstract

This report is prepared in order to comply with Army Corps of Engineers mandates for cultural resource protection under provisions for pond construction covered by Nationwide 26. In addition to the pond area survey proper, other incidental archaeological finds are included in this report in the interest of documenting the prehistory of the living history village now under construction on the property of Reinhardt College, Waleska, Georgia, in Cherokee County. The greatest known occurrence of artifacts is in the pond area and the garden, which lies about 12 WNW of the pond (see accompanying air photomosaic). This sparse occurrence is state site number 9CK1069.

In summary, the Historic Village area has yielded little cultural information. Artifacts found thus far provide scant information about the prehistory of the immediate vicinity, with only a circumstantial suggestion of Woodland occupation. The quartz occurrence and possible lithic scatter is at best doubtful, but will be observed during future construction projects. The rest of the site will also be under archaeological scrutiny by the author as construction progresses. The pond area indicates no evidence of substantial occupation, no features, and no burials; Reinhardt College personnel also indicate that the pond site was reworked several years ago during the installation of the culvert that bounds the upstream (eastern) end of the pond. Consequently, no further archaeological work is recommended for the pond site.
