Abstract

This report summarizes the results of an intensive survey and test excavation at an archaeological site located on the Gwinnett County Resource Conservation and Development Area in the Upper Ocmulgee Soil and Water Conservation District, Gwinnett County, Georgia (Figure 1). This archaeological investigation was sponsored by the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service. The present investigation of the site (9Gw119) was conducted in order to: (1) determine both its eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and the probable effects of Tribble Mill Dam construction; and (2) make recommendation for mitigation of any anticipated adverse impact on the site, if the present investigation reaches the conclusion that this site is eligible for nomination to the National Register. The field investigation was conducted by Chung Ho Lee, with a crew composed of Bill Moon, Susan Wolf, and Patricia Quillian. Dr. Paul R. Fish served as principal investigator for the project. Fieldwork took place from July 19 through July 20, 1978. Seven man/days were spent for the fieldwork. Laboratory analysis and report preparation required an additional five man/days. Mr. Rommy Perkins and Mr. John Spruce, both from the Soil Conservation Service office in Lawrenceville, aided in delineating the site boundary and in the notification to the landowner, Mr. Robert B. Levsey, of the presence and purpose of the investigation crew. Mr. Charles Till, from the Georgia State Office of the Soil Conservation Service, initially observed the site and provided valuable insights concerning the nature of the site.
