Abstract

Oglethorpe Power Corporation is planning a simple cycle combustion turbine power facility in central Monroe County, Georgia. The original 780 ha project area was archeologically surveyed in summer 1988. In 1989, however, the project area was increased by 59 ha. This additional acreage was surveyed in summer 1989 and the results are presented in this report. This investigation was guided by a Research Design prepared prior to the original MA-1 survey. Nine archeological sites (Table 1) and seven artifact occurrences were recorded; none are recommended eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Identified prehistoric components date from the Early Archaic through the Early Woodland; no prehistoric ceramic artifacts were found. Historic components mostly consisted of sparse, twentieth century artifact scatters. One historic site contained structural remains; however, site function-could not be determined.
