Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama was contracted by Southern Natural Gas Company, LLC, of Birmingham, Alabama through Woodard & Curran of Duluth, Georgia to conduct a cultural resource survey for the proposed GADOT - SR 133 Adel line relocation (AFE 205347) project in Colquitt County, Georgia. The proposed project will involve the relocation of approximately 507 feet (ft.) (154.53 meters [m]) of the 4” Adel pipeline. The pipeline will be offset roughly 20 ft. (6.09 m) to provide necessary clearance for construction of the proposed Georgia Department of Transportation (GADOT) State Route (SR) 133 improvements project. The Phase I survey was performed on February 2, 2016 by Kenny Pearce under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. The purpose of this study was to determine if any prehistoric or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead federal agency for this project is the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

The project area encompasses an approximate 1.3-acre tract, measuring roughly 200 m in length by 24.38 m in width. It is located in the southeast corner of Colquitt County approximately 2.4 miles (3.86 kilometers [km]) southeast of the small community of Berlin along SR 133. Hempstead Church Road intersects with SR 133 approximately 280 m southeast of the study area. The subject property can be found on the 1974 (photorevised 1988) Berlin East, Georgia USGS 7.5’ series topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). Photographs depicting the present state of the land within the project area are provided (Figures 2-5).
