Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) proposes to construct an overpass/grade separation near the Norfolk-Southern Railroad crossing along State Route 19 (SR 19)/US 23 in Hazlehurst, Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). The purpose of this project is to provide an unimpeded route for vehicular traffic traveling through Jeff Davis County over the Norfolk-Southern Railroad. The proposed 40 ft x 165 ft overpass and associated approaches will consist of two 12 ft travel lanes with 8 ft shoulders at a combined overall length of approximately .4 miles. The proposed project is located just inside the southern boundary of the City of Hazlehurst. An off-site detour of 3.1 miles utilizing other state routes is proposed. Acquisition of new Right of Way (ROW) and easements is anticipated along the .4-mile corridor. Newly proposed ROW and existing ROW widths vary between 130 and 200 ft.
