Abstract

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is proposing to dredge the Berth 12 dock

immediately above the Talmadge Bridge on the Savannah River in Chatham

County, Georgia. Through Lockwood Greene Engineering & Construction, GP A

contracted with Tidewater Atlantic Research, Inc. (TAR) of Washington, North

Carolina to conduct a magnetometer survey of the project area. A side scan

sonar survey of the area had previously been preformed by Bottom Line Echo

Company of Savannah, Georgia. The magnetometer survey was designed to

identify material that might impact the activities of the hydraulic dredge. That

field work was carried out on 16 May 2001. The remote sensing survey identified

one magnetic target in the project area and a second off Berth 13. Project

personnel consisted of Gordon Watts, principal investigator and archaeologists

Raymond Tubby and Steve Brodie.
