Abstract

In order to comply with the intent of these statutes, regulations, and orders, the Georgia Department of Transportation has contracted with Tidewater Atlantic Research of washington, North Carolina to conduct both historical research and a remote sensing reconnaissance survey designed to identify submerged cultural resources in four proposed hydraulic borrow areas in the Savannah River in Chatham County, Georgia. The submerged cultural resource survey was carried out by Tidewater Atlantic Research during March arrl April 1988. Historical research designed to generate an historical context and identify shipwrecks in the Savannah River was initiated on 6 March 1988 and continued until completion on 23 April 1988. Historical background research confirmed that Savannah Harbor is a highly sensitive historical environment with a well recognized potential for significant submerged cultural resources. Over two hundred and fifty years of historic activity has generated an important archaeological record that includes the remains of a variety of ship and small vessel types.
