Abstract

The project proposes to widen US 78/Lexington Road in the city of Athens from a four lane to a six (11-12 foot) lane roadway from the Oconee Street/Oak Street intersection to just east of Winterville Road for an approximate project length of 0.6 miles and design speed of 45 MPH. The project also proposes to add a SR 10 Loop northbound entrance ramp on the north side of US 78/SR 10/Lexington Road to tie into the Barnett Shoals and US 78/SR 10/Lexington Road intersection. Barnett Shoals Road and each of the current SR 10 Loop entrance/exit ramps will be improved and widened for additional auxiliary and turn lanes to accommodate movement to/from US 78/SR 10/Lexington Road. The proposed configuration for the entrance ramp will remove the Lexington westbound to SR 10 Loop NB left turn movement that causes significant delay on Lexington road. The proposed right of way (ROW) needed to be acquired for the project varies from approximately 30-50 feet along US 78/SR 10/Lexington Road, approximately 20-30 feet along the side roads and approximately 60-270 feet for the existing and proposed ramps.
