Abstract

This report describes Phase II archaeological testing and limited Phase III data recovery of an archaeological site on Fort Benning in Georgia. The site is an early nineteenth century Creek household compound with numerous intact subsurface features, a variety of aboriginal and European artifacts, and extensive architectural evidence. It is virtually a single component site. Testing was conducted to determine the site’s eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), as well as to provide clearance for the installation of utility poles associated with a rail loading facility. Work for this project included historic background research, fieldwork, artifact analysis, and reporting. Testing methods employed included systematic shovel testing, controlled metal detection, test units, and backhoe trenching. This site is recommended as eligible for the NRHP in this report.
