Abstract

On April 27, 2016, Cultural Resource Management inspected Site 9LG488 in response to an active request for Right-of-Entry associated with an off-post timber harvest utilizing Fort Stewart Road (FSR) 181. Archaeological sites 9LG488 and 9LG623 are located along this route and it was recommended that an alternative route be chosen or other avoidance measures employed (Figure 1 ).

On April 27th, May 6th, and May 9th, 2016, CRM used a Topcon Total Station to document the extent of the damage to 9LG488. Points were taken along FSR 1 B to map the length of the painted boundary on the eastern side of the site where the damage occurred. In addition to mapping the roadway, the two intrusions were also mapped. Both areas showed evidence of vehicles entering the site resulting in ruts as deep as 30cmbs. There was very little ground cover due to prescribed burns in the area which allowed good visibility of displaced artifacts. Exact locations of these artifacts were also mapped. Figure 7 shows the most current Phase I map from SEH with overlays of the displaced artifacts, disturbed areas, road, painted trees in the vicinity of the damage, and the painted site boundary.
