Abstract

Cultural resources surveys were undertaken on National Forest land in Towns and Union Counties, Georgia, prior to timber sales, road construction, and wildlife openings. These activities are located within the Brasstown Ranger District, Chattahoochee National Forest, in compartments 319, 331, 332, 375, 376, 377, 378, 380, 381, and 382. The wildlife openings are located within the Swallow Creek Wildlife Management Area (C-319). Two of these openings are in the Cypher Cove area, and the other three openings are along Swallow Creek Compartment 331 and 332 are along High Shoals Creek and Grapevine Creek, and compartments 375, 376, 380, 381, and 382 are along Rough and Stink Creeks. Compartment 377 and 378 are on the south side of Jacks Gap along Highway 180. Approximately 605 acres were surveyed. Four archeological sites were located; one is both a prehistoric and historic site, one is a prehistoric site only, and two are historic sites. Four isolated finds were recorded and these consisted of prehistoric lithic scatters of unknown time periods. In addition, a preliminary survey was done on 20 acres in the Upper Hightower Creek/Shoal Branch area (C-310), eastern Towns County, which located three sites: an historic house site, an open amethyst mine, and a prehistoric soapstone bowl quarry. Preliminary reports are presented on them. A small portion (0.2 acre) of Crump Creek road (Co. Rd. 48) was surveyed prior to widening and paving, which produced an Archaic period camp site (C-367). All four of the latter sites require further testing to determine their significance under National Register criteria. A total of 627.5 acres were surveyed in all of these 12 compartments.
