Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama was contracted by Woodard & Curran of Duluth, Georgia to conduct a cultural resource survey of proposed wetland/stream crossing locations for the northwest Georgia expansion pipeline project in Cobb and Paulding counties, Georgia. Paul D. Jackson served as Principal Investigator for this project and was assisted by Kenny Pearce, Anthony Chieffo, Daniel Lowrey, and Craig Pickering. The project area was visited twice during the course of this investigation (January 25-29 and March 7-10, 2016). The purpose of this study was to determine if any prehistoric or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead federal agency for this project is the US Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District.

The study area, encompassing a total of approximately 41.2 acres, consists of 26 separate tracts of land identified as Areas 1-26 in this report. Areas 1-10 and 15-26 are located within Paulding County with Areas 11-14 being in Cobb County. The right-of-way (ROW) width for each survey area is approximately 120 feet (ft.) (36.57 meters [m]) with lengths for each varying to cover a 200 ft. (60.96 m) area on either side of the wetland/stream crossings. Each of the survey areas follows an existing pipeline corridor. The project areas can be found on the 1972 (photo inspected 1981) Burnt Hickory Ridge, Georgia; the 1992 Acworth, Georgia; and the 1992 Lost Mountain, Georgia USGS 7.5’ series topographic quadrangles (Figures 1-3). Photographs depicting typical land conditions within the survey areas are provided (Figures 4-7).
