Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted a phase

one historic structure survey for the Georgia Transmission Corporation’s

proposed expansion of the Sugar Creek 115/25 kV Substation in Telfair County,

Georgia. The current Substation is located on the northwest side on U.S.

Highway 441 at a point where US Highways 280 and 39 split from Highway 441

and where Barrett Road (County Highway 236) intersects with US Highway 441

to the southeast (Figure 1). This area is on the southwest side of McRae, Georgia.

Plans are to expand the Sugar Creek 115/25 kV Substation, which will involve

possibly enlarging its overall size and upgrading equipment. A one-half mile

Area of Potential Effect (APE) was established for these improvements. Five

historic structures were identified on Walter Barrett Road or Barrett Road as it is

referred to on most maps.
