Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted for the City of Morgan in Calhoun County, Georgia, prior to the construction of a proposed wastewater treatment facility and land application system. The survey area included 40 ha (100 ac) of plowed fields that will be developed into spray fields and settling ponds, and approximately 1.6 km (1 mi) of force main pipeline, which will follow the right-of-way of State Route 45. Surface survey and limited shovel testing led to the recording of three archeological sites and eight isolated artifact occurrences. The table below summarizes the perceived project affect on the resources, and the results of their evaluations for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). As shown, none of the three sites appear to qualify for listing on the Register: either they have been so badly disturbed by modern agricultural practices that they lack integrity, or, they lack information important to the study of prehistory or history.
