Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act 366 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project FR-207-1(2), the widening and reconstruction of Belair Road in Richmond and Columbia Counties, Georgia, was surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. As part of the project, roads and an intersection improvement would involve portions of Land 1 of Fort Gordon Military Reservation. An archaeological survey of the through portions of Land Tract 1 was required under the provisions of Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit for such a survey acquired on April 23, 1991 (ARPA Permit No. DACA21-9-91-1122); the survey conducted on May 29, 1991. The archaeological survey consisted of an rive pedestrian survey with limited subsurface testing where appropriate. Goals of this survey were to locate, document, and assess the significant places within the proposed construction limits of the project corridor the boundaries of land Tract 1 of Fort Gordon Military Reservation. No archaeological artifacts or cultural deposits were discovered.
