Abstract

A cultural resources survey has been completed for 2011/2012 prescribed firelines associated with the six burn blocks on the Conasauga Ranger District in Walker and Chattooga Counties. The area of potential effect (APE) for the present project consists of those areas for which ground-disturbing activities associated with the prescribed burn could potentially occur and in this case the dozer constructed fire lines. According to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Forest and the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), the newly constructed fire lines must be inventoried. The six burn blocks include 3,524 acres and 8.88 miles of dozer line. The burn blocks fall within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests categorical exclusions for survey. Four new prehistoric sites (9WA334, 9CG256, 9CG257, and 9CG259) were found and one prehistoric site (9CG89) was revisited (Table 1). Dozer lines should be moved off the sites to protect those recommended as unknown eligibility.
