Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted an archaeological pedestrian survey of 9,732.6 acres from October 17, 1998 to March 26, 1999. The investigation represents the first product of a contract with the National Park Service and Fort Stewart. The current delivery order's survey tracts consisted of NRMUs A9.4, A11.1, A13.2, A18.1, B3.1, B3.2, B8.1, B8.2, B9.4, D11.1, E4.1, E4.2, E4.3, E6.5, F4.2, and Training Areas B-2 and Taylor Creek Maintenance Area (TCMA). Two hundred-nineteen cultural resources were examined during the fieldwork (Table A-1). The resources included 83 newly recorded sites, eight previously recorded sites, and 128 newly recorded isolated finds. An indeterminate National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility status was assigned to 20 of the sites: 9LI267, 9LI278, 9LI317, 9LG213, 9LI544, 9LI556, 9LI578, 9LI580, 9LI581, 9LI585, 9LI593, 9LI617, 9LI618, 9LI619, 9LI643, 9LI647, 9LI652, 9LI705, 9LI711, and 9LI721. The remaining cultural resources were not considered eligible for NRHP inclusion. Insofar as this was the initial investigation of a long-term, ongoing project, much of the work was devoted to the compilation of background contextual information. Efforts were not confined, however, to merely assembling background information. In addition, geographic information system software applications were set up, and site location and pottery attribute distribution analyses were initiated during the project. PCI anticipates the completion and continued development of more in-depth studies during the course of upcoming contracts.
