Abstract

From April 10, 2000 to May 31, 2001, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of 12,202 ac. (4,938 ha) within Fort Stewart Military Reservation, Bryan, Evans, and Liberty counties, Georgia. The investigation represents the product of a contract with the National Park Service and Fort Stewart. The current delivery order's survey tracts consist of NRMUs A1.3, A5.3, A12.3, A17.0, B8.3, C1.2, C7.3, C7.4, C14.1, D1.2, D1.3, D3.0, D3.5, D4.1, D6.1, D7.4, E2.1, E3.4, E6.4, F10.2, F10.3, F12.3, and F15.2. A total of 195 cultural resource loci were investigated during this survey (Appendix F). The resources include 64 sites and 119 isolated finds. A National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) potentially eligible status was assigned to 10 of the sites: 9LI1190, 9LI317, 9EV249, 9EV291, 9EV294, 9EV295, 9EV312, 9EV321, 9LI1249, and 9LI1256. The remaining cultural resources were recommended ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Thirteen loci are considered "occurrences" because further testing could not be carried out due to the presence of unexploded ordnance. The 12 loci in NRMU E3.4 and one locus in NRMU E6.4 (9LI1231) were classified as unknown until further testing can be conducted. The current study includes background contextual information, as well as, data analyses. Background contextual information includes a discussion of the dominant historical agriculture within the Fort Stewart area. The data analyses include a study of site locations in respect to various environmental variables. Distributional studies are undertaken herein, including analysis of site and artifact data on the intrasite and intersite level.
