Abstract

This report presents the results of Phase Ill Archaeological Data Recovery Mitigation of 9Rilll 0 for the St. Sebastian Way, located in the 1400 blocks of Broad, Jones, and Reynolds streets in Augusta. Site 9Rilll0 had originally been recorded by Southeastern Archaeological Service and recommended as eligible based on its possible contribution to the understanding of the free African American Springfield community. The location chosen for the final alignment exhibited a higher degree of disturbance and failed to produce any archaeological deposits associated with Springfield. However, study of the project area's cultural landscape did contribute to the understanding of African-American residence in the project area. Excavation of a nineteenth century cellar also recovered information on the ways in which material culture was used to display social status, to reinforce gender roles and contributes to the southern perspective on gender and domesticity.
