Abstract

From 20 to 24 March 2006, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological resources survey of the Barren Pointe tract in Chatham County, Georgia. The survey tract consisted of approximately 145 acres of which 90 consisted of uplands. This investigation was carried out for Sligh Environmental, Inc. and was conducted in compliance with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, and by criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended) and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, by personnel qualified under the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards (36 CFR Part 61).

Background research was conducted at the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia and on NAHRGIS (Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information Systems), an online database operated by the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. No previously recorded archaeological resources were found within the project tract. Three sites were recorded within a 1.6 km (1 mi) radius (9CH1027, 9CH1031, and 9CH1032). Site 9CH1027 is an historic artifact scatter with an isolated prehistoric artifact (ceramic sherd). This site has been determined ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Sites 9CH1031 and 9CH1032 are historic cemeteries and have been determined eligible for the NRHP.

Phase I archaeological resources survey consisted of screened shovel tests at 30 meter (100 ft) intervals. A visual inspection of all exposed ground surfaces and slopes was also conducted. Two historic, middle to late twentieth century artifact scatters were discovered (9CH1116 and 9CH1117). These sites are recommended not eligible for the NRHP. Archaeological resources clearance is recommended.
