Abstract

In September and October of 2010 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS), conducted a Phase I archeological survey of a single parcel of land (Tax Parcel121‑006), the Austin Pinckney Steiner ill Tract, covering nearly 20 ac in Athens‑Clarke County. The tract was comprised of a single ridge and its adjoining slopes on the northeastern side of the Middle Oconee River. Athens‑Clarke County is interested in acquiring the property and maintaining it as green space. There are no plans to develop the tract. Documentary research determined that a nineteenth century grist mill was located at Jennings Shoals on the river, but outside of the project area, and that two structures were within the present project area. These structures were identified in the field and recorded within the limits of site 9CA 189. An additional three prehistoric archeological sites also were recorded within the project area. The three prehistoric sites are recommended not eligible for listing on the National Register because of poor preservation and limited research potential. The eligibility status of the fourth site, 9CA189, remains unknown. Phase I survey investigation determined that the site was preserved well enough to yield significant archeological information with additional excavation. Additional archeological and archival investigation would be necessary to firmly determine the site's eligibility status. However, since the property will be passively maintained as green space, the site will remain protected. Thus, we recommend that no additional archeological studies are required.
