Abstract

In early June, 2014 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of the proposed 6.25 ac Majors 115/25kV substation in south central Forsyth County. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archeological sites within the area of potential effect for the proposed project, so that potential effects to those resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project area is mostly wooded and is located on a ridge and ridge slope between State Route 9 and Bagley Creek. The project area was surface inspected and 27 shovel tests were excavated in areas most likely to contain sites. One archeological site, a twentieth century farmstead assigned site number 9F0571, was located and investigated. We recommend that this archeological site is not eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places because it is not known to be associated with persons or events important in history and has little to no further research potential. Because no significant (eligible) archeological sites are present, we recommend that the project be allowed to proceed.
