Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological survey of approximately 4.5 miles of a proposed 115 kV transmission line corridor and 6.8 acre substation site in Hart County, Georgia. This proposed corridor begins where the existing North Airline 115 kV transmission line intersects Memorial Road, west of the city of Hartwell, Georgia. The proposed corridor runs roughly northeast, ending at the proposed 6.8 acre Mt. Hebron substation site at the northwest corner of the intersection of Mount Hebron Road and Crumps Road. The purpose of this survey was to identify potentially significant cultural resources within the Area of Project Effect (APE).

Archaeologists excavated shovel tests and examined available surface exposures along the proposed Hartwell B Mt. Hebron 115 kV transmission line corridor and substation site during January and February of 2011. Shovel tests were not excavated on the property owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. However, archaeologists examined the topography and noted that this portion of the corridor is a low-probability area.

No archaeological sites were identified within the proposed Hartwell B Mt. Hebron 115 kV transmission line corridor, nor were any archaeological sites identified within the proposed Mt. Hebron substation site.
