Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) contracted with the Chattahoochee National Forest to survey 680 ha (1680 ac) for cultural resources in selected portions of 12 timber compartments on National Forest land. Survey areas within these compartments consisted of noncontiguous tracts in Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Murray, Union, and Walker Counties and were distributed among the Armuchee, Cohutta, and Toccoa Ranger Districts. All survey tracts are scheduled for either timber harvesting or commercial thinning and wildlife plot burning. Two to four person survey crews from SAS surveyed the 680 ha from November 21 through December 13, 1994 and required 53 person days to complete. We recorded 57 sites and 33 occurrences for a total of 90 cultural resources. Four of the 57 sites were previously recorded by Forest Service archeologists but bad not yet received State site numbers. Site density is one per 11.9 ha (29.5 ac) and cultural resource density is one per 7.6 ha (18.7 ac). Prehistoric sites range from small, undiagnostic lithic scatters to dense scatters of protohistoric artifacts. Historic sites consist mostly of small, late nineteenth ‑ early twentieth century houses. We recommended seven sites potentially eligible (Class II) and one site definitely eligible (Class I) to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Sites that are recommended eligible or potentially eligible should be protected against future ground disturbing activities. The remaining 49 sites recorded on this survey require no special protection.
