Abstract

In July through September of 2014, Archaeological Consultants of the Carolinas, Inc. (ACC) conducted archaeological survey of the acres Stanford Timber Sale survey analysis area. The survey area included 22 stands in four compartments. This investigation has resulted in the documentation and assessment of 27 archaeological sites and two isolated finds. These resources are summarized in Table i.1. These sites include three historic house sites or farmsteads, four prehistoric lithic scatters, a possible historic cemetery, two stone mounds, and 17 rock pile sites (one of which also contains the remains of a house). Five previously recorded resources could not be located during this investigation. They are presumed to have been either destroyed since their documentation or misplotted on Georgia Archaeological Site Files maps. Of the archaeological resources evaluated during this investigation, sites 9PM1539 and 9PM2334 are recommended for further work. Site 9PM1539 is a stone mound that is unique in its size and setting. Further evaluation is needed to confirm its function. Site 9PM2334, a historic farmstead, retains relatively intact outlines of multiple structures and has the potential to contribute information on late nineteenth/early twentieth century farmstead arrangement and construction, as well as on the lifeways of those who lived there.
