Phase II Investigations of 17 Sites (9CE33, 9CE38, 9CE125, 9CE133, 9CE178, 9CE220, 9CE880, 9CE2013, 9CE2014, 9CE2016, 9CE2017, 9CE2018, 9CE2020, 9CE2082, 9ME41, 9ME1009, and 9ME1026) on Main Post, Fort Benning Military Reservation, Chattahoochee and Musco

Under a continuing services contract with the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted a series of Phase II archaeological investigations at 17 sites within the reservation. The objective of this testing was to evaluate each site to determine its eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and to make recommendations for future archaeological investigations. All work was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended; Executive Order 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment); and the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974.

A total of 17 sites (9ce 33, 9ce 38, 9ce 125, 9ce 133, 9ce 178, 9ce 220, 9ce 880, 9ce 2013, 9ce 2014, 9ce2016, 9ce2017, 9ce2018, 9ce2020, 9ce2082, 9me41, 9me1009, and 9me1026) were investigated during the Phase II survey. Multiple components were recorded during the investigation ranging from Paleoindian to the twentieth century.

Seven of the sites (9ce38, 9ce125, 9ce178, 9CE2016, 9me 41, 9me 1009, and 9me1026) are recommended as eligible for inclusion into the NRHP. These sites have intact features, stratigraphic integrity, and/or will enhance the cultural history of the region. Each of these sites need protective measures taken so further disturbances will not impact their integrity. In the case of 9CE2016, mowing and maintenance practices are having a detrimental effect on the site integrity and these practices should be re-evaluated. The remaining 10 sites (9ce33, 9ce133, 9ce220, 9ce880, 9ce2013, 9ce2014, 9ce2017, 9ce2018, 9ce2020, and 9ce2082) are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and require no further archaeological investigations. These sites have been destroyed or heavily disturbed by previous land use and natural activities and/or possess scant cultural material or information. Site 9CE2018 is a historic cemetery that, while not eligible for the NRHP, is protected by law from any ground disturbance.
