Abstract

This report presents the results of an archaeological survey conducted in the Oconee National Forest in Putnam County, Georgia. During the first half of 2011, 150 acres were surveyed on U.S. Forest Service land known as the Head Plantation during the 19th century. The objective was to complete a subsurface survey by means of shovel testing in this forested environment, with the intention of adding to the growing body of archaeological research and knowledge of the prehistoric and historic occupations in Oconee National Forest. Of the twentyone sites located, three were historic and 18 were prehistoric. None of the sites meet the requirements for recommendation for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
