A Cultural Resources Survey of the Proposed Town Creek Timber Sale Greene County, Georgia

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. has completed a cultural resources survey of the Town Creek Timber Sale Project in the Oconee National Forest Oconee Ranger District. This project consists of a cultural resources survey of 826 acres of land in Greene County, Georgia. The goal of this cultural resources survey was to identify all potentially significant archaeological and historical resources within the survey stands and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Fieldwork for this project was conducted from August 4, 2014 through October 2, 2014. The field crew consisted of Gretchen Eggiman (Field Director), William Bryant, Rebekah Minchew, William Lowe, Inger Wood, Matthew Wood, and Dean Wood. No extant structures are located anywhere within the current project area. We revisited thirteen previously recorded sites (9GE7, 9GEuoo, 9GE1323, 9GE1623/ 9GE1633, 9GE1624/ 9GE2348, 9GE1627, 9GE1847, 9GE1848, 9GE1849, 9GE2350, 9GE3500). We identified 42 new sites (Sites 9GE3634 through 9GE3647 and 9GE3649 though 9GE3675, and 9GE3679), and identified twenty-one isolated finds (IF665-1-1, IF665-1-2, IF665-1-3, IF665-4-1, IF665-19, IF665-22, IF665-27, IF665-30, IF665-32, IF665-35, IF665-37, IF665- 39, IF665-42, IF665-44, IF665-45, IF665-48, IF665-53, IF665-58, IF665-59, IF665-61, and IF665-64). Some of the previously recorded sites have been determined to be heavily damaged (9GEuoo, 9GE1847) or are isolates consisting of a single positive shovel test (9GE3500). It should be noted that site 9GE1626 was plotted along the northwestern/ central stand boundary of Block 5, but was relocated during the current survey, to the southwest and immediately along Pecan Road. Also, site 9GE1349 is plotted just outside the south- central stand boundary and may be associated with 9GE1624/2348. However, current survey delineations were unable to extend site boundaries to incorporate 9GE1349. Results suggest twenty-three sites are considered Unevaluated eligibility for listing on the NRH P (9GE1323, 9GE1623/ 9GE1633, 9GE1848, 9GE1849, 9GE3634, 9GE3635, 9GE3637 through 9GE3642, 9GE3645, 9GE3649, 9GE3651, 9GE3657, 9GE3659, 9GE3664, 9GE3667, 9GE3671, 9GE3672, 9GE3674, 9GE3675). The remaining 26 sites do not appear to be eligible for listing on the NRHP.
