Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted archaeological resources survey and evaluation of the proposed Parker Road widening corridor, in Rockdale County, Georgia. The proposed corridor encompasses portions of Parker and Oakland Roads and connector ramps to frontage roads on the south (Iris Drive) and the north (Dogwood Drive) of Interstate 20. Project goals included location and evaluation of all archaeological resources which might be impacted by proposed construction activities and development of management recommendations. Historical and archaeological research consisted of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Field survey involved pedestrian coverage of the entire length of the 1.44 mile long project corridor. Screened shovel testing and visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces were the primary methods used to locate and evaluate archaeological resources. No archaeological sites or isolated finds of cultural material were encountered during the survey. Previous highway and road construction, industrial and residential development, and erosional processes have severely impacted the project corridor, leaving the area with poor overall integrity. Based on the findings of this cultural resource survey, it is recommended that the proposed impact corridors be given archaeological clearance to proceed.
