Abstract

In December 2005, R.S. Webb & Associates (RSWA) conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey and Phase II testing of the Avenue Augusta Development Site in Columbia and Richmond Counties, Georgia. The survey was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The project area covers approximately 30 acres in the City of Martinez, Georgia. Three archeological sites (9CB626, 9RI1114, and 9RI1115) were recorded during the Phase I survey of the property. Three structures recorded within the project area, Structures 1 and 2 associated with archeological site 9CB626, and previously recorded structure RI-1 associated with archeological site 9RI1114, are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Following Phase I survey, Site 9CB626 was recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Site 9RI1114 and 9RI1115 were recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP and were subjected to Phase II testing investigation. Following the Phase II testing, both sites are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. No further work is recommended for the Avenue Augusta Development Tract.
