Abstract

On September 16 and 17, 2002, four staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation conducted an archaeological survey of three access roads for the Chatham County Economic Development Site. The proposed project would construct three four-lane roads into the site, two from SR 307 and one from Pine Barren Road. The survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto.

As a result of this survey, two previously unrecorded archaeological sites were documented. Site 9CH1000 is an historic house site and much of it lies outside the project’s Area of Potential Effect (APE). The portions of the site within the APE lack integrity and do not contribute to the site’s overall eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Site 9CH1001 is an historic still and is recommended not eligible for the NRHP. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no affect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to the present design concept.
