Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Montgomery Bridge Replacements, Milledgeville Baldwin County, Georgia

Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the Montgomery Street Bridge replacements in Baldwin County, Georgia, on October 29, 2003. The first corridor extends approximately 1000 feet (304.8 meters) down West Montgomery Street between North Irwin Street and North Jackson Street with a right-of-way of 100 feet (30 meters). The second portion of the corridor begins on North Tattnall Street 120 feet (36.58 meters) south of W. Thomas Street and terminates 120 feet (36.58 meters) south of West Mcintosh Street. The total distance of this portion is approximately 1000 feet (304.8 meters). Historic background sources were consulted, as were the archaeological site files to place the area in historic and prehistoric context. Two archaeological sites (9Bl238 and 9Bl239) were discovered in the project corridor. Site 9Bl238 is a twentieth consisting of glass fragments, whiteware, pearl ware, porcelain, a pair of toy scissors, slate, brick, coal, and a fragment of clay drainpipe. Site 9Bl239 is another twentieth century artifact scatter. Artifacts recovered from this site include glass fragments, a screw, wire nail, and an indeterminate nail. Site forms were completed for the sites and filed with the Georgia Site File in Athens, Georgia. The sites are considered V ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. No additional archaeological study is recommended.
