Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey was conducted by New South Associates of the SR 257 corridor on November 30, 2000. The approximately three mile long corridor is located in Laurens County between Interstate 16 and the City of Dublin. New South surveyed a 150 foot corridor which varied from the north to the south side of the road. The results of that survey were detailed in a report submitted to both the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The report, Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Proposed SR 257 Widening Laurens County, Georgia (Hamby 2001), was revised with both GOOT and SHPO comments and a final version was submitted in June of 2001.

Following the initial SR 257 survey, it became necessary to re-align Bellvue Avenue near the eastern end of the corridor. This realignment would cut through a strip of land between SR 257, Bellvue Road, the railroad, and Industrial Parkway. The area to be surveyed for this alignment contains 2.51 acres.

This addendum report contains only a brief discussion of the survey of the original right-of-way, a description of the additional work performed, and conclusions regarding the findings of the additional survey. The reader is referred to the original report for the prehistoric and historic overview. The Principal Investigator for this study was J. W. Joseph, Ph.D. The Field Director and report author was Theresa M. Hamby.
