Abstract

Location: This project involves the construction of a full diamond interchange at 1-85 and Flat Shoals Road near Union City. Additional right-of-way will be required for the four ramps and realignment of

one dead end frontage road.

Method of Survey:

1. Planning: The site files at Georgia State University and the University of Georgia had no sites recorded in the project area. The project was plotted on the Fairburn U.S.G.S. quad sheet. No areas of high site probability were marked prior to field examination.

2. Field Work: All the proposed ramp ways and the section of frontage road realignment were examined on foot (they had been staked). Some of the ramp area had been altered upon initial construction of 1-85. No archaeological material was collected from the exposed places along the ramps and roadway.

3. Sub-Surface Tests: None were indicated.

Results: No sites were located, but the project was not felt to be in a high site probability area. It is my opinion that the archaeological resources of the state will not be affected by construction of the project.
