Abstract

The project will involve construction of a Middle School with various playing fields on a tract of land which is presently under pines and mixed hardwoods of a 30 to 40 year growth. The G.S.U. Site files were consulted prior to field work and while no National Register sites are in the vicinity of the project, a small lithic site (9 Fu 23) is recorded for the Niskey Lake area. On a previous survey of the area, outcrops had been noted which looked like steatite. The two site types thus predicted for the school project were small lithic stations like many seen in the Piedmont area and possible quarried steatite outcrops. The project was plotted on the Ben Hill U.S.G.S. topographic map before field investigation.
