Abstract

This project is a bridge replacement on new alignment. Falling Creek flows directly into the Ocmulgee River and was hypothesized to have extensive floodment and a high probability of archaeological sites. Upon inspection by the archaeologist attached to this bureau, the creek was found to have little floodplain, though it certainly is wide. The trees along the bank - mature hardwoods - were eight feet below the present ground surface, indicating a sizable amount of recent alluviation. It seems likely that the stream was channelized by a W.P.A. or Soil Conservation project. Any archaeological sites still present are beyond reasonable retrieval.
