The proposed project would consist of upgrading the existing traffic signal installations at four intersections in DeKalb County along approximately 0.38 miles of Clairmont Road, as depicted on the Project Location Map (see Figure 1). The intersections are as follows:
Intersection #1 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at Briarcliff Road
Intersection #2 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at I-85 NB Ramps
Intersection #3 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at I-85 SB Ramps
Intersection #4 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at Sam’s Club
Upgrades vary at each intersection, with improvements including new signage, upgrading aerial fiber optics, upgrading guardrails, upgrading spanwires, the replacement of the existing signal poles and signal heads, as well as the installation of conduits, cabinets, and ADA compliant pedestrian accommodations. All work would be done within the existing right-of- way (ROW), which ranges from 50 feet to 110 feet from the centerline of Clairmont Road.
Intersection #1 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at Briarcliff Road
• Relocate the damaged utility pole at the NE corner of the intersection
• Mast arms will be considered at the intersection, if feasible. Provide new signal heads with FYA.
• Upgrade the intersection with new pedestrian poles per ADA compliance
• Provide a separate power meter for the CCTV camera
• Identify the possibility for having a separate pole for the overhead signs along SB Clairmont Rd rather than having a joint
use pole with utilities. If separate pole is used, existing signs to be relocated.
Intersection #2 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at I-85 NB Ramps
• Need to upgrade guardrail (T-beam) at northwest corner if pole is located on island.
• Replace curb and remove sidewalk north of new ramp location.
• Upgrade the intersection with span wire configuration
• Provide new signal heads with FYA and update the signal head alignment for the split phasing for the EB traffic
• At SW corner of the intersection, modify island and right through lane to allow easier right turns from the 2nd lane.
• Visible rock at SW corner. Alternative foundation types may need to be considered for strain pole installation.
• Upgrade the intersection with new pedestrian facilities per ADA compliance
Intersection #3 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at I-85 SB Ramps
• Widen island for pedestrian access, restripe to reduce the width of existing westbound lane to approximately 12 feet.
• Consider providing a signal for the westbound right turning vehicles at the intersection
• Provide new signal heads with FYA and update the signal head alignment for the split phasing for the WB traffic
• Upgrade the intersection with span wire configuration
• Relocate the existing CCTV camera on the SE corner to new strain pole.
• Upgrade the intersection with new pedestrian facilities per ADA compliance
Intersection #4 - SR 155/Clairmont Road at Sam’s Club
• Splice the new 72 SM fiber to the existing fiber cable in the existing pull box on the NE corner, near the signal cabinet.
• Retain the existing switch in the cabinet and provide new Gbics.
