Under the mandate of Army Regulation 420-40, Fort Stewart Military Reservation and Hunter Army Airfield have prepared a Historic Preservation Plan for use in meeting their cultural resources compliance responsibilities. The Historic Preservation Plan is comprised of four components: technical synthesis; planning manual; map volume; and an inventory volume. These components explain the compliance process and describe the installation’s historic properties. At present, 243 prehistoric and/or historic archaeological sites have been identified on the installations, combined. Evaluation of these properties is in the early stages. The installations also host standing structures which must be considered for their historical significance. Two of these structures have been evaluated as potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, 54 historic cemeteries have been identified on the reservation; three are located on Hunter Army Airfield and the remainder are on Fort Stewart. This document is the technical synthesis, a scholarly report on the environment and culture history of the study region. It details the record of previous archaeological work, the status of knowledge regarding archaeological sites and historic structures, previous efforts at predictive modeling and a discussion of long range research issues. The technical synthesis is the source for development of future research designs and provides baseline cultural information for use with the other Historic Preservation Plan components.
