Abstract

Under the mandate of Army Regulation 420-40, Fort Stewart Military Reservation and Hunter Army Air Field have prepared a Historic Preservation Plan for use in meeting their cultural resources compliance responsibilities. The Historic Preservation Plan is comprised of four components: technical synthesis; planning manual; map volume; and an inventory volume. These components explain the compliance process and describe the installation=s historic properties. At present, 243 prehistoric and/or historic archaeological sites have been identified on the installations, combined. Evaluation of these properties is in the early stages. The installations also host standing structures which must be considered for their historical significance. Two of these structures have been evaluated as potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, 54 historic cemeteries have been identified on the reservation; three are located on Hunter Army Airfield and the remainder are on Fort Stewart. This document is the planning manual, the component designed to provide land-use guidance in respect to historic properties. The planning manual provides data on the cultural resources impact analysis review and planning, the status of compliance tasks, standard operating procedures, issues and concerns, plan integration, budgeting and other topics related to successful implementation of a historic preservation program.
