Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The subject site includes a proposed 100-foot by 100-foot compound and a proposed approximately 35-foot by 220- foot access route that would traverse in a northeasterly direction from State Highway 129 to the compound as shown on Attachment 12b. Clearing and grading would be necessary for construction of the proposed telecommunications compound and access. The facility would include a 250-foot guyed-type telecommunications structure (255-feet with appurtenances) and associated ground level support equipment. The proposed facility would be located east of State Highway 129, immediately south of the intersection of State Highway 129 and County Road 233 near Abbeville, Wilcox County, Georgia.

This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. Through our review of available cultural records and databases we identified five recorded archaeology sites within a one-mile radius of the proposed project site. Four of these are in the vicinity of the proposed site. One of these four sites, 9WI31, may be located within the APE for direct effects. In 1996 this site, (which we do not know, with certainty, whether it was east or west of State Highway 129), was recommended potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

During the course of two Phase I intensive field surveys ECA performed for this archaeological assessment, no archaeological cultural resources were encountered. Thus, we conclude that the proposed undertaking would have no effect on any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the proposed undertaking.
