A PHASE I CULTURAL-RESOURCES SURVEY FOR THE PROPOSED ETOWAH BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT AT CAMP FRANK D. MERRILL IN LUMPKIN COUNTY, GEORGIA

Abstract

On September 23, 2009, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, under contract with the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation in Columbus Georgia, perfonned a cultural-resources survey for the proposed Etowah Bridge replacement project at Camp Frank D Merrill in Lumpkin County, Georgia. The intent of this field investigation was to locate, identify, and record prehistoric and historic properties within the project boundaries, as defined by the U.S. Army (Figure 1). Kenny Pearce performed the survey, under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. Photographs documenting the present state of the project area with regard to terra in, general flora, and previous land-usc impacts have been provided (Figures 2 and 3). The Etowah Bridge (Structure #M0325) project area is located northwest of Dahlonega within Camp Frank D. Merrill in Lumpkin County, Georgia, as found on the 1988 Suches, Georgia, USGS 7.5' topographic quadrangle (see Figure 1). The survey tract is small and encompasses an area around the bridge of approximately 30-x-25 meters (m).
